Aussie Trekka
4x4 & Camping Australia
A family of 5 from New South Wales, Australia out there enjoying this awesome country we live in.
Camping, 4wheel driving, offroad adventures and generally good times.
National Parks info on the great place.

Just inland from Grafton is one of the best little spots i have been to in ages. The drive in is easy on a fairly well maintained dirt road. There are some warning signs saying 4wd only but i guess this would be for if it was wet, there are some step sections with some decent roll overs to protect the track from water damage. Apart from that it was a nice drive in with plenty of great things to check out along the way.

We decided to take another track in as i’d heard there was something a little more challenging, and although the real challenge was finding it there were a couple of times the chainsaw need to come out as this track i would assume get very little use.

Heading down into the campsite is a step section but whilst we were there we saw someone come in with a Jayco offroad caravan and they didn’t seem to have much problem at all.

The campsite itself is top notch.

The pit toilet didn’t smell at all and was pretty awesome coz there was a birds nest inside with some tiny little birds, although i’m not sure what type they were.

If you wanted to camp right down near the water there are literally dozens of places you could pitch a tent or set up a camper trailer but we opted for the higher ground due to having the women folk with us and the luxury of a toilet. Now for some strange reason i can’t for the life of me find the pictures i took of this area.

The river is only about 300 meters away and it sounded nice falling asleep with noise of it in the
background.

The first rapid, above this there is a really long stretch of calm water, we walked up the river as far as we could to float down.
We invested $35 on three blow up airbeds from K-Mart and this provided hours upon hours of fun, here is a video of me and my three year old daughter have going down the second rapid.

Down stream there are a few rapids that (were at the time of writing) a heap of fun. With anything though a certain caution should be taken as there are some deep holes and a few shallow rocks that if you hit your head on could cause server injury if not worse.
So after floating down both sets of rapids there is a relatively easy exit point.

Easy exit point is just below here and the walk back up the river is mainly grassy paddock with a couple of wheel tracks to follow. There were some bindy type prickles in some of the grass so we took thongs down the river with us to make it a little more comfortable on the walk back up.
For those a little more adventurous there are a couple more rapids you can go down. The third or the first after the take out point is not to hard to get back from as you can walk up the side of of the river but the next two are nearly impossible to get out of and getting back was an adventure on it’s own.

Across from the take out point is a track that takes you up and over to an old abandoned Stock-mans hut. The track getting there is fairly tough and should not be taken lightly.

Also remember if camping here that it’s national park and you need to bring your own fire wood, there are plenty of fire pits there and a few BBQ’s as well as a heap of picnic tables.

There never seems to be enough time when camping, everything seems to go super fast, well for me anyways.

A shot of the river from the back of my tent.
Sunday morning it was time to think about packing up, no one likes to do this after the time we had had. It was good to see that another family had come in and set up on the river bank and so had a group of 15 or so kayakers.

We went for one last drive along the river and said good-bye to this awesome place, we will be back at some time in the future with a doubt in my mind.

There are no camping cost attached to this area and it seemed quiet enough. The water temperature was fine although the girls were not to happy with Dave myself and the kids didn’t seem to mind. I would imagine this place in the summer could get really busy so getting in early would be my suggestion. I would recommend it to anyone that likes to have fun in a river smaller kids and bigger ones like me.
Anyways it was another top weekend with some really good friends and i’m super excited about the next adventure we get to head out on.
